Discovering Utrecht: The Little Amsterdam

Utrecht, often referred to as “Little Amsterdam without the tourists,” is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and home to Utrecht University, the country’s largest university. Historically, Utrecht served as the religious capital of the Netherlands, adding a rich layer to its cultural tapestry.

The city’s central railway station is the busiest in the Netherlands, surrounded by modern glass buildings. However, just a few hundred meters from the station, you’ll find a serene contrast: a mosque and an Arabian quarter that bring the scents and flavors of the East. This vibrant street is lined with food shops, clothing stores, and pastry shops. What sets this Arabian quarter apart from similar areas in other European cities is its cleanliness and the well-maintained buildings, offering a unique blend of Eastern charm and Dutch orderliness.

As you approach the city center, about 1 km from the central station, the resemblance to Amsterdam becomes striking. Narrow streets with unique, historic buildings give Utrecht an irresistible charm. The blend of ancient architecture and modern amenities creates a captivating atmosphere.

A canal runs through the center of Utrecht, lined with restaurants and cafes along its banks. This unique setting allows you to enjoy exceptional specialties from around the world. The variety of restaurants and bars is vast, ensuring that everyone can find a place that suits their taste.

In the heart of the city stands the cathedral Dom Tower (Domtoren), where you can climb to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and a symbol of Utrecht.  The tower’s rich history and stunning architecture make it an essential stop.
